Reyna

“Things are far worse than I thought they were,” she said as she settled into the chair beside Nollaig’s bed. Her mother was awake and well now. All the pain had been wiped from her skin, and her eyes were alert. Reyna, on the other hand, felt as though she’d been turned to ash.

The battle had ended just as Reyna had expected. Reyna’s fae warriors had fought well, and the humans had been defeated. Glencora had fled, choosing to abandon her fighters. She had never transformed into the dragon again. She might have won if she had. No one quite understood why she’d chosen that path.

“I take it you did not get your hands on that axe.”

“Oh, I got my hands on it. Right before Glencora swung it at my head.” She sighed and closed her eyes. “If it weren’t for Seelie’s magic, I’d likely be dead.”

Seelie. Her stomach twisted once more.

“What’s the matter?” Nollaig’s voice went sharp. “Beyond the usual, of course. You look as though…is Eislyn okay? Has something happened to her? What—”

“Seelie is dead.”

“Sorry, what?”

“Seelie is dead.” Reyna pried open her eyes to see her mother’s face staring back at her with an expression that matched the turmoil in her own soul. “It turns out that everything we’ve been fighting for has already been destroyed. A very long time ago. When the Dagda gave magic to the fae, it had some unintended consequences. It killed Seelie. All this time, Dagda has just been trying to right his own mistakes. If it weren’t for him, I doubt any of this would be happening.”

Armed with the knowledge Glencora had given them, Eislyn had spent the past few hours flying through the shelves of the library. She knew where to look now, and she’d found a great deal of information discovered by the previous High Queen. Details on Dagda and what he’d done. It had been eye-opening.

“Oh.” Nollaig blinked and then sank back into her pillows. “Oh. Well, that certainly explains a great deal, but…if Seelie is dead, then how does his magic remain?”

“Because Dagda put most of the magic into the land itself. Six sources of power, six courts. The rest he used to trap Unseelie in Inishfall as best he could. That way, Unseelie’s magic could only spread through blood and bones and minds. He cannot roam the lands as he once could.”

“Unseelie could once roam the lands? No wonder Dagda was so intense about it all,” Nollaig muttered. “He felt guilty. He was trying to fix his own damn mistake. And yet he had the gall to blame me for everything that’s happening.”

“Yes,” Reyna said tensely. “It turns out that none of this is your fault.”

Nollaig—her mother—grimaced. “I’d rather it be my fault. If Seelie is dead, he can’t help us. And if Glencora is trying to destroy all his magic…that’s what happened on the Parched Plains, isn’t it?”

Reyna nodded. “She destroyed his source of power in the Fire Court. I wondered why the everflames died, and that’s why.
